The listing had been live since the previous fall and the feedback was always the same: buyers could not work out what the front room was for. It is a long, narrow, north-facing space with two doorways and a fireplace on the short wall, so every arrangement anyone had tried fought the traffic through it.

I floated the seating off the walls, put a wool runner down the length of the room to make the traffic route deliberate, and lit it in three places at hip height so the north light stopped being the whole story. The dining room got a table two sizes smaller than the one that had been there, which is the trick nobody believes until they stand in it.
